Is Feng Shui Superstition?
Saturday, October 4, 2008Quoted from wikipedia "Superstition is a set of behaviors that are related to magical thinking, whereby the practitioner believes that the future, or the outcome of certain events, can be influenced by certain specified behaviors. The idea of "good luck" and "bad luck" gives rise to many superstitions, such as the belief that it is bad luck to wear gold and silver together.
Now let us analyzes what is Feng Shui.
Another quote from wikipedia "Feng Shui or fengshui (;) is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. The practice is estimated to be more than three thousand years old."
Placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment does not sound like magical thinking. This placement and arrangement is unique to each individual and is not one singular specified formula that says one size fit all. It does not relate to "future, or the outcome of certain events, can be influenced by certain specified behaviors". It is more to a designer way of thinking to create a special theme and comfortable place of living for each individual. And Feng Shui never states that it is bad luck to wear gold and silver together. Instead, sometime it would create a balance for the individual when wearing both gold and silver together if the person lack of or have a weak metal element.
Thus, we can conclude that Feng Shui is not superstition.
Now let be serious. What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is not a belief. It does not matter what your religion is. It does not require you to chant, pray, have faith, dance or just by placing a mirror or ba gua at certain angle or at the door or window.
Feng Shui is about the understanding on energy. It is about studying the flow of energy, how it interacts and what is the effect. Feng Shui practice is about how to use this knowledge to bring balance and harmony.
Energy is ever present and can be found in everything. Every objects vibrate energy and will influence and impact on any other object in it's path .
There is three important aspect of Feng Shui. The environment, people and time. The universe is constantly changing, so does energy. Feng Shui analysis all these changes; the environment, the particular person at the particular time.
The objective of practicing Feng Shui is to bring balance, improving the environment for the best possible benefits for all who reside there.
Today unfortunately, there are much hearsay and myth about Feng Shui. For example, a common myth is that if you hang a ba gua or mirror at the window or doorway, it would help to ward off 'evil' or to reflect 'bad luck'. Feng Shui is never about using object to bring 'luck' to oneself and reflect 'bad luck' to others. Feng Shui is about harmony. If a ba gua is use as a magnifying object at the door, it is use because of it material or color. Example, by using wood, metal, ceramic(earth) or red (fire) ba gua, it is to attract the necessary element. By attract the element, it does not mean that all the force of the element would just flow to you and leave your neighbor dry. Just like a stream, if you dig a path at the side of the stream, some of the water would just flow to the new path while the rest continue it normal way. Feng Shui is always about the benefit for all.
A simple rule of thumb. If a Feng Shui advice given to you does not sound logical. Most likely it not Feng Shui. Remember, Feng Shui is always about balance and harmony.
